Allostat Libera is South Carolina-based e.m.butler’s debut with Plaster Fe, a compendium of cicatrized digital artifacts and glitching marginalia. Made in response to a sudden, overwhelming convergence of emotional turmoil and insecurities the artist faced at the beginning of 2023, the album sketches buried feelings through gaunt timbre, swaddling thick pools of bass and chattering percussion in layers of elusive, vaporous matter. Tracks unfurl at the fractalized pace of online communication, spinning samples of VoIP noise cancellation from voice calls into loose webs of sound that drape gently across time. Syllables degrade, cast in malign shapes, crushed to fine grit that rubs and smooths foul edges to slick curves; grooves churn with meticulous disorder, spitting piecemeal phrases through chasms of dark melody. More than a simple statement of intent, Allostat Libera captures a chaotic headspace in an alien yet immediately recognizable language, one that recasts the rhythms of modern life as an anxious shadow play of ever-morphing relationships maintained via imperfect and unpredictable mediums.
